HERE’S A BIT OF UNEXPECTED FACTS CONSIDERING THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY:
thedailyfeed:

Unexpected good news! Violent crimes — including assaults, rapes and robberies — plummeted by a remarkable 13% last year.

A weak economy and relatively high unemployment make the data an unexpected — and welcome — phenomenon. Experts said they would have expected violent crime rates to stall or increase in 2010 because of such an unstable social climate.
Instead, “we’re surprised to find how much it [declined],” said Professor Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School.
A total of 3.8 million violent crimes were committed in 2010, compared with 4.3 million a year earlier, the Justice Department reported. That figure works out to 15 crimes committed per 1,000 people age 12 and older.
